5.9-magnitude quake jolts Lahore, Punjab cities and parts of K-P

Quake with epicentre in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush jolts region; K-P Assembly session briefly suspended

Hours after an earthquake jolted Balochistan's Barkhan district, a 5.9-magnitude quake sent tremors across Lahore. several other cities in Punjab, as well as parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), on Saturday, triggering panic as people evacuated homes and office buildings while reciting prayers.

According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), tremors were felt in Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Mianwali, Multan, the Potohar region. other districts of the province.

The Punjab PDMA spokesperson said the earthquake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located in Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region, while its depth was recorded at 191.3 kilometres.

Meanwhile, K-P PDMA said the earthquake originated at a depth of 178 kilometres, with tremors felt across most districts of the province, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mansehra, Shangla, Swat. Chakwal.

The K-P PDMA said its Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) was in constant contact with all district administrations to monitor the situation. According to the authority's initial assessment. no reports of casualties or property damage had been received from any district in the province.

It added that the situation was being continuously monitored and that the Emergency Operations Centre remained fully operational. The public was urged to report any untoward incident by calling the PDMA emergency helpline at 1700.

The quake also affected the K-P Assembly session, which was being presided over by Deputy Speaker Suriya Bibi.

Following the tremors, a large number of members evacuated the assembly. However, after a five-minute break, the session resumed.

In Punjab. the PDMA said it had sought reports from across the province on any possible damage caused by the earthquake. Director General PDMA said the relevant district administrations had been activated immediately and were inspecting buildings to assess their condition.

The authority added that its provincial control room. along with district emergency operation centres across Punjab, remained operational round the clock. Citizens were advised to report any earthquake-related damage to the PDMA helpline at 1129.

Separately, Rescue Punjab spokesperson Farooq Ahmad said the Provincial Monitoring Cell was in contact with control rooms across the province.

He said no emergency reports related to the earthquake had been received from any part of Punjab so far. adding that further updates would be issued after the situation was fully assessed.

Earlier, three people were injured as earthquake tremors were felt in Balochistan's Barkhan district. adjoining areas, spreading fear and panic among residents.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre, the earthquake measured 5.2 in magnitude. occurred at a depth of 19 kilometres. Its epicentre was located 58 kilometres northeast of Barkhan, with tremors felt also in Kohlu, Rakhni and Musa Khel areas.

According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). the roof of a hotel collapsed in Gangri, an area of Musa Khel district, as a result of the quake, injuring two labourers. Police stated that the injured were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.

Further. the PDMA revealed that the house of a resident named Fazal in the northern area of Gangri also collapsed, leaving one person injured.

Administrative officials. rescue teams reached the affected areas, while the injured were shifted for urgent medical care and provided with necessary medical facilities.

The PDMA stated that the respective district administrations were directed to assess the damage, expedite relief activities in the affected areas,. conduct surveys to evaluate any further losses.

A day earlier, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Balochistan's Sibi district at a depth of 42 kilometres. However, no loss of life or property was reported.
