Southampton failed to win any of the games that followed their spying, losing at Oxford. drawing at home to Ipswich and away at Middlesbrough before winning 2-1 in the playoff semi-final second leg.

An EFL statement issued early on Tuesday evening read: “An independent disciplinary commission has today expelled Southampton from the playoffs after the club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other club’s training.

“In addition the club have received a four-point deduction that will be applied to the 2026-27 Championship table. alongside a reprimand in respect of all the charges.”

Middlesbrough welcomed that ruling: “We believe this sends out a clear message for the future of our game regarding sporting integrity. conduct.”

Although Middlesbrough trained on Monday. the uncertainty surrounding the potential outcome meant the players were given a day off on Tuesday. They will however return to the practice pitches on Wednesday and have organised a flight to London on Friday.
