Floyd Mayweather faces theft charge after allegedly using bad check to buy $200,000 watch

Floyd Mayweather is facing two felony charges over allegations he used a bad check to buy a $200,000 watch in 2024.

The charges are for theft and intent to defraud. The theft charge carries a penalty of up to 20 years in jail if someone is found guilty. although sentences of that length for the offense are rare.

According to Nevada court records obtained by ESPN. Mayweather wrote a $200,000 check for a watch he bought at a high-end Las Vegas store in December 2024. However. according to the records, Mayweather “had insufficient money, property, or credit” in his bank account to pay the amount in full. The theft charge alleges the former boxing world champion bought the watch “knowing. the check would not be paid when presented”.

Mayweather’s attorney has yet to comment on the charges. Marc Cook. an attorney for Gold & Beyond, the store where Mayweather used the check, said his client had filed a complaint in February with Nevada authorities.

“The reason for the delay is that my guy trusted Mayweather. was trying to give him every opportunity to make good on that,” Cook said. “And it got to the point where he wasn’t getting responses. wasn’t getting money for a watch that Mayweather had for well over a year.”

Mayweather made hundreds of millions of dollars during his professional boxing career. He retired undefeated with a 50-0 record. However, the Internal Revenue Service has filed a $7.3m lien against the 49-year-old over unpaid taxes.
