Sydney Sweeney's 'The Housemaid' to get stage adaptation after film success

Producers behind Broadway's 'Life of Pi', 'The Notebook' to adapt psychological thriller for stage show

Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried’sThe Housemaidis expanding beyond a Lionsgate film franchise to become a stage show,Varietyreported.

The psychological thriller. based on Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel, is now being adapted for the stage by British company Melting Pot Productions. Producers Simon Friend, Hania Osmolska,. playwright Bekah Brunstetter have previously worked on productions including Broadway’sLife of Pi,Paranormal Activity, andThe Notebook.

The Housemaidfollows a young woman with a mysterious past who takes a job as a live-in maid for a wealthy family. She soon discovers that the wife is orchestrating a plan to use her to escape her violent husband.

Lionsgate’s President of Global Products. Experiences Jennifer Brown stated that the project "reflects how our hit films and IP can be transformed into novel experiences.”

Producer Simon Friend added, “When I first read ‘The Housemaid,’ it was exhilarating. What occurred to me is how truly theatrical the story is, not only happening largely in a single, claustrophobic location,. the twisty elements which contemporise what has long worked in potboiler stage thrillers.”

Brunstetter added, “I’m so thrilled to be bringing this gripping, emotional, strange,. even funny story to the stage,” highlighting the universal themes of “jealousy, the pain of desire, and the traumas that connect us.”

The release date and production timeline for the play have not yet been announced.
