Scores of firefighters tackle major blaze at south London recycling centre

Fifteen fire engines. about 100 firefighters have been called to tackle a major fire at a recycling centre in south London.

Fire control officers were first called just after 5.30pm on Monday to the centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey.

London fire brigade sent crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road and Greenwich, and two 32-metre turntable ladders.

Footage posted on social media showed huge plumes of thick smoke rising high above the city.

The fire also affected train travel, with passengers travelling between Charing Cross. London Bridge being told to check services before travelling, and to consider travelling later if possible.

Southeastern Railway said Hastings line services were starting and terminating at Tonbridge in Kent.

London fire brigade told residents near the fire to keep their windows and doors closed because of the smoke.

Three years ago, 15 fire engines. about 100 firefighters were called to a fire at another recycling centre in south-west London.

The whole building in Herne Hill went up in flames. partly collapsed, yet there were no reports of any injuries.
