KP parliamentary leaders to discuss ‘wheat ban’ today

PESHAWAR: The speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly. Babar Saleem Swati, has called a meeting of the parliamentary leaders in the provincial assembly to discuss ‘suspension’ of wheat supply from Punjab to KP besides closure of CNG stations across the province.

The meeting was called after KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi, Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi. Mr Swati met and discussed the issues emerging after imposition of ban on wheat supply from Punjab to KP and prolonged closure of CNG stations in the province.

In an invitation letter to guests, Mr Swati said that a meeting was convened on Monday [today] at 11am in Rahman Baba Conference Room of the assembly secretariat to discuss the unconstitutional ban on transportation of wheat. flour from Punjab and unconstitutional limited supply of natural gas and closure of CNG stations in KP.

The governor, chief minister. speaker of provincial assembly, who met on the occasion of oath-taking ceremony of new ministers, termed closure of CNG stations and suspension of wheat supply from Punjab, violation of the Constitution.

During the meeting. the governor said that KP could procure wheat from Sindh province if Punjab allowed access to the corridor.

He added that the government of Sindh was willing to supply wheat to KP.

An official statement, issued from Governor’s House, said that the three also discussed law. order situation in the province besides holding of South Asia Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians’ Conference for the first time in the province.

Soon after conclusion of the meeting. Mr Swati called for a meeting of parliamentary leaders in KP Assembly to discuss ban on movement of wheat from Punjab that could lead to potential food crisis in the province besides prolonged closure of CNG stations in KP.

In a statement issued from his office, Mr Swati stated that closure of CNG stations was severely affecting transportation, industrial activities. daily life of people.

He said suspension of wheat supply from Punjab could cause flour shortage and price hike in KP. “Such action could lead to serious problems for people,” he added.

He said that as the custodian of the house, it was his constitutional responsibility to immediately address matters of public interest. to bring all relevant institutions on a single platform to formulate an effective and joint strategy. He also called Mr Kundi and Mr Afridi to attend the session.

The statement said that leader of opposition in provincial assembly, Dr Ibadullah, president of CNG Association Abrar Saeed, representatives of Flour Mills Association, chief secretary, minister for law, minister for information, minister for finance, food secretary, energy. power secretary, law secretary, finance secretary, auditor general and president of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry would attend the meeting.

Mr Swati said that the purpose of the session was to conduct a detailed review of the causes behind CNG shutdown. wheat supply disruptions, see actual picture, and ensure protection of public rights by improving coordination between the federation and the province in order to devise a comprehensive and sustainable solution for resolution of the issues.
