Canada's Kone grateful for support after surgery

Canada's 6-0 win over Qatar marred by serious injury

Canada midfielder Ismael Kone has thanked his team-mates and fans for their support after having surgery on a broken leg.

The 24-year-old sustained the injury during the World Cup co-hosts'thumping 6-0 winover Qatar on Thursday.

The former Watford player was caught late. badly by Assim Madibo as he challenged for possession, with players on both sides looking shocked as Kone received lengthy treatment.

The Sassuolo midfielder was able to wave to the crowd as he eventually left the pitch on a stretcher.

Canada Soccer says Kone will miss the rest of the tournament, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

He said on Instagram:,external"Your love and support has been felt, honestly thank you so much. You can't even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers

"I wanted you to know that I love you guys from the bottom of my heart. our brotherhood is everything to me.

"What you guys did yesterday will stay with me forever. I'll be back very soon and we'll keep making more memories together."

Canada's final game in Group B is against Switzerland on 24 June (20:00 BST).
