Iran. the United States agreed to a peace deal mediated by Pakistan after overcoming several challenges during the past two months, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced in the wee hours of Monday.
Shehbaz said the agreement has been reached after intensive talks. "We are pleased to announce that the Peace Deal between the United States of America. Islamic Republic of Iran has been REACHED," he said in tweet.
"Both sides have declared the immediate and permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The official signing ceremony will be on Friday, 19 June in Switzerland," he added.
Shehbaz thanked the United States and Iran for their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict. He also praised Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye for their immense contributions in this regard.
With the agreement now in place, mediators will facilitate a series of meetings this week. These pre-implementation discussions will lay the foundation for the technical talks and the official signing ceremony.
US President Donald Trump also confirmed that the deal with Iran was "now complete".
"The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorize the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz. and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
Earlier, hopes for a breakthrough agreement between the US. Iran hung in the balance on Sunday after an Israeli air strike on Beirut's southern suburbs threatened to derail delicate negotiations aimed at ending months of conflict across the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump publicly criticised Israel's latest attack. saying it had disrupted plans for an imminent peace agreement with Iran. The unusually blunt remarks exposed growing tensions between Washington. Tel Aviv as mediators raced to salvage a deal that could reshape the region's security landscape.
Speaking to Axios, Trump said the strike had delayed the expected signing of an agreement by several hours. "It was supposed to be now. Now it is scheduled for a few hours from now," Trump said in a phone call. adding that he could not believe the aggression.
"An hour before we are supposed to sign the deal," he said. "Why did Bibi [Netanyahu] have to do a ** attack? I was so ** off. I let him know. He has no *** judgement. I let him know that," Trump said.
The Israeli military said it had carried out a "precise" strike against Hezbollah targets in Beirut's Dahiyeh district for launching projectiles towards northern Israel. Lebanese authorities reported that at least three people were killed and several wounded when missiles struck the Ghobeiry area.
The attack came at a critical moment in diplomatic efforts led by the United States. supported by regional mediators including Qatar and Pakistan. Later, on social media, Trump declared that the Beirut strike "should not have happened". urged all sides to step back from further escalation.
Iran reacted angrily to the Beirut strike, questioning whether the United States could guarantee commitments made during negotiations. Iranian Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf said the attack demonstrated. Washington either lacked the will or the ability to enforce its promises.
Military officials in Tehran warned that Israel's actions would not go unanswered. while Iran's top joint military command declared it remained ready to strike at the "enemy's heart". Despite the sharp rhetoric, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signalled that diplomacy remained alive.
Pezeshkian said the Supreme National Security Council had endorsed continuing negotiations. pursuing the "path of dialogue", an indication that Tehran was not abandoning the talks despite mounting pressure from hardliners.
Qatari mediators arrived in Tehran on Sunday to help advance discussions, while Pakistan. Egypt expressed hope that positive developments would contribute to lasting peace and stability throughout the region.
According to sources, the emerging framework could include the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. easing restrictions on Iranian oil exports in exchange for Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and freezing aspects of its nuclear activities pending further negotiations.
Major differences remain unresolved, however, particularly regarding Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium and the future structure of its nuclear programme. Washington insists Iran's nuclear capabilities must eventually be dismantled, while Tehran maintains that its programme is peaceful.
The broader conflict has already inflicted a heavy toll. Fighting involving Iran, Israel. Hezbollah has left thousands dead, disrupted global energy supplies and heightened fears of a wider regional war.
Sunday's strike in Beirut underscored how fragile the diplomatic process remains even as negotiators edge closer to a possible agreement. Complicating matters further. Israel announced it had killed senior Hezbollah commander Ali Mussa Daqduq in a separate strike in south Lebanon.
The Israeli military accused Daqduq of orchestrating the 2007 kidnapping. killing of five American soldiers in Iraq and described his death as a significant blow to Hezbollah's leadership structure.
As uncertainty persisted over the timing of any agreement, Trump maintained that peace remained within reach. "We are very close to a deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon," he said.
Whether Sunday's violence proves a temporary setback or a decisive obstacle may determine not only the fate of the negotiations. also the trajectory of a conflict that has destabilised much of the Middle East for months.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Israeli strike which took place despite the ceasefire. before the signing of a peace deal between the United States and Iran. "I strongly condemn today's Israeli strikes on Beirut," he said on X.
"This conflict is having a devastating impact on the world's economy. I urge all parties to show maximum restraint at this crucial moment & I strongly hope for a successful outcome of the ongoing efforts by the US & Iran."
