KU teachers suspend month-long exam boycott

Decision follows assurances on leave encashment, increase in house-ceiling benefits

Teachers at the University of Karachi have suspended a month-long strike. examination boycott following negotiations with government officials and university authorities, paving the way for the resumption of examinations that had been stalled since early May.

The decision was taken by the Executive Council of the Karachi University Teachers' Society (KUTS) during an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening. The university's Officers Welfare Association also announced an end to its protest.

The development came hours after a meeting convened by the Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC), where representatives of teachers, officers. employees were given assurances regarding their demands.

Speaking to The Express Tribune after the Executive Council meeting. KUTS President Dr Ghufran Alam said the strike had been deferred in view of the sanctity of Muharram. "We are postponing the strike in respect of Ashura. During this period, teachers will be able to conduct examinations in their respective departments," he said.
