Dean left out of England squad for Lord's Test

Dean left out of England squad for Lord's Test

Charlie Dean impressively led England in series against New Zealand and India earlier this summer

England have left white-ball vice-captain Charlie Dean out of their squad for the historic Test at Lord's against India next month.

Dean. 25, who has played three Tests, is set to captain England at the ongoing T20 World Cup, with captain Nat Sciver-Brunt ruled out of the next two matches at least because of a calf injury.

But, having had a back injury of her own at the start of the season. returning earlier than planned when Sciver-Brunt also missed the start of the summer, England have omitted Dean to manage her workload.

The Test starts on 10 July, just five days after the T20 World Cup final. nine of England's squad for that tournament are included, including Sciver-Brunt.

The World Cup players not included are Dean, batters Sophia Dunkley. Danni Wyatt-Hodge, spinner Linsey Smith, and all-rounders Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp.

Left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman. 18, who made her white-ball debuts earlier this month is included, while all-rounder Mady Villiers, who has not played for England since 2024, has been recalled.

Lancashire pair Ellie Threlkeld and Grace Potts, who have not played for England in any format, also make the squad.

England squad for India Test:Nat Sciver-Brunt (capt). Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Tilly Corteen-Coleman, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Amy Jones, Heather Knight, Emma Lamb, Grace Potts, Ellie Threlkeld, Mady Villiers, Issy Wong.

Lord's to host women's Test for first time

Many of those selections are a reflection of the change to the longest format but. given she is set to lead England at the World Cup while Sciver-Brunt is injured, Dean's absence is the most surprising.

Having filled in impressively at the start of the summer. she would have been the obvious candidate to lead England if Sciver-Brunt does not recover from her calf injury.

Kemp and Gibson, meanwhile, have only recently returned from back injuries.

The Lord's Test is historic, but England's priority this summer is the home T20 World Cup.

Experienced opener Tammy Beaumont, fellow batters Maia Bouchier. Emma Lamb have been included, while Alice Capsey could play her first Test.

England have not played in the longest format under coach Charlotte Edwards. with their most recent being aninnings defeat by Australia in the Ashes series down under in early 2025.

Dunkley and Wyatt-Hodge were in England's middle order for that match, with Beaumont and Bouchier the openers. They picked a bowling attack of Lauren Bell, Lauren Filer, Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Sophie Ecclestone.

MacDonald-Gay, 22, has not been included this time. She had a back injury through the winter and. though she has been in good form for Surrey on her return, has been overlooked.

Her absence has created an opportunity for 23-year-old Lancashire seamer Potts

She has taken 11 50-over wickets and 11 T20 wickets for Lancashire this season. Her county team-mate Threlkeld offers a second wicketkeeping option to Amy Jones.
